Whenever I go fabric shopping, I find that there’s a fabric that I really like, but it’s too expensive to buy enough of it to make a dress, for example. Instead, I’ve started buying one metre lengths of the nice fabrics and I’m making these easy scarves out of them!
What I’ve found with non-stretch fabrics (like quilting-weight cotton) is that the easiest way to cut straight (into say, a square) is to run a piece of wool across the piece of fabric and then chalk on a line to follow. If you’re trying to cut around a really precise pattern, I would suggest getting a fairly good pair of scissors - they’re really sharp and cut a good, sharp line, so you don’t end up wiggling the scissors around trying to get them to cut, and ending up with a line that isn’t straight. Also, use the whole length of the blade of the scissors. If you just use the very tip of the scissors like a lot of people do, you can get a messy line. Open the scissors up the whole way and cut right to the tip of the blade.
I hope this is sorta what you were looking for. If you want to know anything else please let me know!
Thanks very much :) I hope you like it!
I honestly think the best thing to do would be to get a professional to do it. It might be possible to do it yourself, but you’d probably have to totally resew the zipper and it’s crazy hard to sew through leather/other materials used to make boots. Look around though, they might not be that expensive to fix. Ask a few places what it would cost before you buy them, because if the discount is huge it might still be cheaper than buying a non-discounted pair :)

I had exams and Christmas and back to school… However, I have a couple new projects in the works… they’ll be up in the next couple of weeks :)

Today I went out for lunch, had an exam and babysat for three hours, and in between I still had time to make this dress! I promise it looks better in person; it was hard to take a photo of myself wearing it!
Nearly finished… tutorial up later!

The next two tutorials I plan on making both involve zips, so this tutorial will give you some practice in sewing zips!
ecoideologia answered your question: So I know a lot of people are a bit scared of zippers
Yes please!!! also i would looove to se how to lined a jacket or some tips about sewing wet look spandex. Your blog is awesome!
I think I’m going to look into leggings - should be simple and can use so many different stretch fabrics - and spandex is good for that!
I have an idea for a tutorial to make a really simple little coin purse type thing using a zip, just so we can get a bit of practice sewing zips before I post the full tutorial of how to make a skirt (which has a zipper in it). Would you guys like that?
The summer’s just starting up for me! :P
